{December} Stitch Fix -- Manic Mondays

Monday morning, as I lazed around the house, taking my sweet time to catch up on social media and enjoy my morning caffeine, I reflected on a time -- not so long ago -- when mornings at the Hobgood house were absent of any sign of tranquility.

{I think it's fair to say that FRENZIED would be an appropriate adjective to describe that chapter in my life.}

Now that the boys are a little older, and my husband is home some mornings, life before the sun rises isn't so bad.  In fact, I quite like the early morning hours and all the SILENCE they bring.

Most days anyway.

This month's blog post is a little different.  There was a time -- again, not so long ago -- when the boys were younger, and thus totally uncooperative in the mornings.  One particular morning was so distressing (or so I thought at the time!), that I actually sat down at the computer to write about it that evening.  Because, clearly, I choose strange methods of stress relief.

{Essentially, I wrote a post for a blog that just never found its way to the World Wide Web.  I had baby brain at the time, as I'm sure some of you mommas can relate.}

Here is the throwback post, which makes me laugh (and cringe!) now five years later.  Yes, it is lengthy.  And corny.  And ever-so-dramatic.

{If you've ever conversed with me for more than seventeen seconds, you know that I am ALL THOSE THINGS and more.}

Just Another Manic Monday – 8/24/09

“I wish it was Sunday.  ‘Cause that’s my funday.”

Clichéd, I know, but there’s no better way to describe this morning than lyrics from the classic Bangles song.  Too bad I couldn’t “Walk Like an Egyptian” right back to bed after I saw that it was shaping up to be one bad Monday.  I know, I know.  So corny…

First off, let me just remind you that I rocked Cane from the time he was born, until I reluctantly ventured back into the working world six weeks later.  Lucky for the little guy, I am one of the privileged who enjoy summers off, so I rocked him again from the end of May until the start of August.  Ninety-nine percent of my friends and family told me what a mistake I was making by rocking this child day and night.  The one percent who told me otherwise consisted of grandmothers who I cursed this morning at 5 A.M.

As I rocked Baby Cane and watched a little Fox News, I was mesmerized by his angelic face and ruffled “bed head.”  I gazed at him as he nursed his bottle and soon his eyes drifted back into a sweet dreamland. I thought to myself that I am surely the luckiest gal in the world.  Once the little man was fast asleep and peaceful, I gradually stood from the rocking chair to slink back to Cane’s bed where I could carefully lay him down and go relax with my morning java.  No such luck.  Curse the grandmas and their sage advice.  The kid just wanted to ROCK.  That's it.

Each time I tried to place Cane in his crib, as soon as he touched the sweet-smelling sheets, he would awaken as if a night tremor had traumatized him.  Seriously.  I would pick Cane back up, soothe him back to sleep in the rocking chair, and repeat the process again.  By the fourth or fifth time I had repeated this exasperating process, I was irritated to say the least.  Bad, bad words were on the tip of my tongue.  (Or maybe bad, bad words were flying out of my mouth, but that's beside the point.)

At long last, I placed a sleeping Cane in the middle of our bed to rest.  Before I could go any farther in the routine of getting ready for work, coffee was a must.  I deserved an extra cup, for sure.  I moseyed to the cabinet to search out the coffee filters, only to discover that they were gone.  Missing.  NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.  My mind suddenly flashed back to a time Sunday night when I adoringly watched Cane crawl all over the linoleum kitchen floor, batting around the package of filters.  Somehow that cute memory wasn’t so endearing anymore.  I had to skip my cup of joe and proceed with the morning rituals.  Not cool.

Just when I thought I had things under control, Dramatic Dalton arose from his slumber, only to have come down with a case of the dreaded "belly ache".  He grumbled, mumbled, and grouched about Derek’s 3:30 A.M. alarm waking him up a few hours earlier, as if I had somehow missed the blaring rendition of “Life is a Highway” myself at that hour.  I fetched the Tylenol for Dramatic D., only to be faced with more frustration.  Apparently “bubble gum” wasn't the preferred flavor of Tylenol this go-round.  I begged and pleaded with Dalton to swallow the pink goo so I could move on about my morning business.  Just like the rest of my morning – no such luck.  After fussing and arguing with him, I finally left him hovering at the sink, head in his hands, pouting about the nasty medicine.

Finally ready for work and all set to wake sleeping Cane to load the car, I rounded the hall’s corner to find Dalton still perched at the kitchen sink, with only 1/3 of the liquid consumed.  Somehow this child can manage to be slapped in the back with a baseball and happily take a base, but he can’t swallow three teaspoons of kiddie Tylenol.  Give me a break.  I must have ranted, raved, and maybe even cursed a little again, because before I knew it the medicine was ingested and the issue was over.

I loaded up the little Hobgood brood and dropped them off at their respective places for the day.  Amazingly enough, this task was carried out without fuss or fight.  The smile that spread across Cane’s face as he was placed in the sitter’s arms spurred a momentary pang of jealousy as I envied her for getting to spend the day with the little rascal.  I stepped back into my car to enjoy the ten-minutes of calm bliss that I look forward to every morning as I ride to work, and looked down at my phone to see a good morning text from Derek that I had somehow missed hours earlier:  “Rise and Shine, Valentine.” The madness of the morning vanished into thin air.  LOVE.  THAT.  GUY.

So even though I can’t “blame it on the train” like in those Bangles lyrics, I managed to have yet ANOTHER manic Monday. Story of my life.  If  I was a betting woman, I’d bet that in seven more days I’ll have a similar story to tell.

See.  Told you it was chock-full of the DRAMA.  Because if there's one thing I've learned about being a momma, it's that every situation with the little ones seems like the most PARAMOUNT event in the whole entire universe, when it's SOOOOO NOT.

It's embarrassingly comical now, to look back on that blog post and know that, at that moment in time, I really, truly felt like a fussy baby, a stubborn little boy, and no coffee were going to bring me to my breaking point.  WOE IS ME.

Which brings me to this month's Stitch Fix critique.

Do you know how I felt after seeing the five items in my box?  WOE IS ME.  That's how I felt.

Why did I feel that way?  Because I knew I would have to send some of the items back.  And I loved them all.

Yes, First World Problems at its finest, right here.  I'm so ashamed of myself.

ITEM #1:  Berneen Diamond Print Knit Dolman Top (by 41Hawthorn)

You'll have to excuse the poor quality of all these photos.  I misplaced my camera.  I also had a 14-year-old boy taking the photos.  Enough said.

This shirt was cute.  Just not cute enough to keep.  The photos don't do the colors justice, but the pattern was a fucia and navy diamond print.  I'm normally not a fan of the dolman sleeve, but this one was pretty cute.

Status:  Sent Back

ITEM #2:  Ronaldo Graphic Print Lace Detail Tunic (by Collective Concepts)

The back of this top was what made it so cute.  Most of the back was made of navy lace, which was adorable.  I would have gladly shown you the cute back, but......the aforementioned 14-year-old boy deleted the picture before sending it to me.

Status:  Sent Back

ITEM #3:  Bixby Bird Print Tab Sleeve Blouse (by Pixley)

I pinned this top on Pinterest, and.....here it is!  I love it to pieces.  It's a little bit weird, just like me.  I love the silky material, and the little pearl and gold buttons on the sleeves.  This was also the cheapest item in my box, so....SCORE!

Status:  Kept

ITEM #4:  Presley Colorblock Button-Back Sweater (by 41Hawthorn)

Love, love, love the bold color in this sweater.  I had also pinned this on Pinterest, so I was stoked to see it in my box.  It's also very soft and comfy!  Dalton said it was the ugliest piece in my box, but I disagree.  He was mortified when I told him I had just worn it the day before to his ballgame.  I don't think it's ugly at all.  {The male species is a weird one.}

Status:  Kept

ITEM #5:  Elissa French Terry Moto Jacket  (by Market and Spruce)

Last, but not least, the "moto jacket" I had pinned on Pinterest.  I had high hopes for this one.  I had high hopes that I would love it, that it would look okay on me, and that it would be something I could afford this month.  Well, two out of three ain't bad.  Against my momma's advice to keep this super cool jacket, I did decide it was a little out of my price range.  Dang it.

Status:  Sent Back    (*sniff, sniff*)

Before starting Stitch Fix, I kept hearing that the Stitch Fix boxes will get better and better over time. That is the truth, all right.  My stylist this month promised that the spring pieces will be cheaper, and I hope she's right!

{November} Stitch Fix -- Besties

Once upon a time, I was a weird little girl.

Shocking, I know.

Just like my mini-me, Cane, I had a vivid imagination as a child.  Jimmy and Kristie, my close pals, were both products of that vivid imagination.

Whenever I sat down for supper in the evenings, Jimmy and Kristie enjoyed supper, too.  If I took a drive with my parents to the grocery store, Jimmy and Kristie tagged along.  In one instance, my dad and uncle even humored me enough to pick Jimmy and Kristie up from the side of the road to give them a lift.  Somehow, Jimmy and Kristie had managed to carve their own paths through Bernie that day, with Dad and Uncle Michael eventually rescuing them from the menacing streets of Pfeffer Subdivision.

Like I said, Jimmy and Kristie were such good friends.  And did I mention.....they were imaginary?

I'm a grown woman now, and you know what?  I still have imaginary friends who make an impact on my daily life.

Only they are not really my friends.

And they're not imaginary people.

They are, in fact, real people who would probably be more than a little creeped out that I talk about them as if they are my real friends.

You see, there are these four women that I "know," and sometimes I like to imagine what it would be like if I actually got to hang out with them for the day.  After reading their books, listening to them at speaking engagements, and stalking their blogs for the past few years, I feel like the five of us would have such a ball together.  We'd be besties for certain.

These women are:  BooMama {Sophie}Big Mama {Melanie}Jen, and Angie.  They are super cool, classy mommas.  And boy are they god-fearing women.

 In my imagination, our moms-only playdate would take place in Melanie's hometown of San Antonio.  {Mostly because ever since she wrote this blog post, I've been dying to eat Mexican food in San Antonio, and I can't seem to convince Derek that we need to go there.  YET.  And also because I could visit family while I'm there.}

The five of us gals would meet up about this time of year.  {Mostly because these women seem to REALLY enjoy their football, and like to gather together to cheer on their respective teams.  I'm sure I could fake some enthusiasm by yelling, "Hook 'em horns!" at the TV a few times.  They'd never know I'm a sports enthusiast FRAUD.}

We would eat, drink, and be merry.  Sophie would humor us with her thick southern accent and flair for storytelling.  Jen would entertain us with tales of her wild, rambunctious children, and all their shenanigans.  Angie would give us hair-styling tips, since she has the most gorgeous mane of hair on the face of the planet.  And lastly, Melanie would wow us with some scrumptious, homemade guacamole.

At the end of our visit, we would gather 'round for an evening jam session with the Cartees.  Because, since it is my imaginary fun day and all, the Cartees would just happen to be in San Antonio that day, and would be dying to hang with us girls for an hour or so.

So how does this whole disturbing talk of my imaginary friends tie in to this month's Stitch Fix blog?  Well, these women not only inspire me in my daily walk with Christ, and in navigating my way through this thing called "parenting," but they also inspire my taste in fashion.

Each of these four women are mommas with style, which is no easy feat to accomplish sometimes.  It seems as though the general consensus is that once a gal becomes a momma, she's not supposed to try to be stylish anymore.  Let's face it, though.  Fashion is just FUN no matter how old you are.  {Plus, there is a huge difference between wanting to be a hip and fashionable mother, and trying to contend with Kris Jenner.}

My Stitch Fix this month was THE BEST YET.  It was so good, and it was so ME.  I desperately wanted to keep all five items, but just couldn't swing it this month.

So here we have it.  Lucky Fix #4:

ITEM #1:  Liam Stone & Fringe Pendant Necklace (by Bay to Baubles)

I'm wearing this necklace in the photo below.  I had pinned this necklace on Pinterest, so I was excited to see it in my box.  However, after careful consideration, I did decide to send it back.  I think it was because my last Stitch Fix necklace broke already, and I'm still feeling a tad bitter about that.

Status:  Sent Back

ITEM #2:  Sam Hi-Lo Short Sleeve Tee (by Market and Spruce)

Oh, the gray tee....  Another item that I really, truly wanted to keep.  Yes, it is a plain gray tee.  But it is not just any plain gray tee.  It is the softest plain gray tee known to man.  I bet you Jen Aniston has one, since she seems to be a big fan of plain tees.  However, after much deliberation once again, I did decide to send it back.  It was $44, which is too much for a plain gray tee.  So long, my soft friend.

Status:  Sent Back

ITEM #3:  Moni Stud Detailed 3/4 Sleeve Blouse (by 41Hawthorn)

Low and behold, another item I had pinned on Pinterest {even though the one I pinned was in a floral print, I believe}.  Upon opening the box, this was the one item that I said I wouldn't keep.  My mother always complains that I wear too much black and that I need more COLOR.  After trying the top on, I knew I'd keep it.  I just love to wear black for some reason, and I love the embellished details on the bib and sleeves.  You can't see from the picture, but the cuffs of the sleeves have a really cute slit detail on the back.

Status:  Wore the Next Day!

ITEM #4:  Essie Mixed Stripe Cardigan (by Fate)

Here it is......my new favorite article of clothing, which I had ALSO pinned on Pinterest. {Three cheers for this month's Stitch Fix stylist!}  When I tried this cardigan on, Derek was confused by the way it hangs long in the front, but is waist-length in the back.  I tried explaining to him, to no avail, that this is the new style.  As Derek is a man who thinks style is very silly, he remained perplexed by the way this cardigan is made.  I happen to love it to pieces.

Status:  One of My New Faves

ITEM #5:  Alexander Graphic Knit Drape Front Cardigan (by Moon Collection)

I almost couldn't force myself to drop my return items off at the post office this time, knowing this gem was sealed inside.  I loved this.  I really, really, really did.  It was everything Aztec that I had been wanting.  I know you might find this incredibly hard to believe, BUT....I had also pinned this on Pinterest!  In case you were counting, that was 4 out of my 5 Stitch Fix items that were actually pinned on Pinterest.  Unreal!  Anyway, this picture is a bit unflattering, but this cardigan was SO awesomely warm and everything I wanted.  Sadly, the price tags on these two cardigans made it impossible to justify keeping both.  So this one had to go.  {Excuse me while I shed a tear.}

Status:  Sent Back

So the lesson I've learned from this month's Stitch Fix is to......just keep pinning, just keep pinning, just keep pinning, pinning, pinning.  What do we do?  We pin, pin, pin.

{Apologies if you've never seen Finding Nemo.}

TRY STITCH FIX -- YOU'LL LOVE IT!

{October} Stitch Fix -- Aztec Obsession

Friends, it's time for me to fess up.

I went a little hog-wild with Pinterest this past month.  Okay, maybe I went A LOT hog-wild.

If I had logged my actual time spent on Pinterest this month, I KNOW I would be hanging my head in shame right this very second.

You see, last month my Stitch Fix stylist sent me a necklace I had actually, seriously, for-real pinned on Pinterest.  So, let me tell you what happened next.....I became obsessed.

I suddenly thought that there was a slight glimmer of a chance that I would actually, seriously, for-real get another item I pinned on Pinterest.

After about a week of pinning, though, I could almost visualize my stylist wading through my pins on Pinterest.....and scratching her head with confusion.

I'm certain she was perplexed -- possibly even humored -- by the vast range of styles pinned on the board before her eyes.

I could picture her muttering to herself things like, "Does this gal want to be a rock star?  A Prep?  A sporty chick?  A little bit glamorous?  Maybe she's going for a more bohemian look?  WHO IS THIS GIRL?!"

Because the truth is, I've just gone a little crazy pilfering though "women's fashion" on Pinterest.  I've had a ball.  It's been like making the most amazing Christmas wish list ever.  Only with 300+ followers judging me with every photo I pin.

{I don't judge you if you pin recipes calling for quinoa and flaxseed.  Don't judge me because I have a thing for Aztec-print cardigans.  Okay?  Okay.}

Basically, what I wanted my "stylist" to glean from looking at my Pinterest board this month was this:  I am in love with the whole Aztec thing that's suddenly become so popular.  I find it precious.  And I so very badly want to own something in an Aztec print.  Preferably a big, snugly cardigan like one of these.

Want this sweater!
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/12877548909769482/

So in love with the tribal cardigans.
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/12877548909812901/

So picture me throwing a fists-balled-up, stomping, temper tantrum when there was nothing Aztec in my box this month.  Nothing.  I thought I had clearly communicated my all-things-Aztec obsession through my twenty-seven pins on Pinterest, but apparently I was wrong.

Really wrong.

I'm not sure what I communicated to my stylist, other than that I am kind of boring.  That's what this month's box felt like anyway.

Did I like the pieces?  Sure.  They were all okay.  But they were just that -- okay.  Nothing stand-out or super special.  Just okay.

What DID I find in my box this month?  Well, let me just give you a peek.

ITEM #1:  Topanga Crochet Detail Flutter Sleeve Blouse (by Skies are Blue)
I quite liked this top, even though Derek said it reminded him of a frilly shower curtain, but it's just the wrong season for it.  Anyone who works as a "stylist" for a living surely has a better idea than I do of what's "in season" and what's not, but I'm just not feeling this one for fall.  I love the bright color, and the crochet detail IS really cute, even if D disagrees, but I'm just looking for something a little warmer right now.  Sure I could wear it under a cardigan, but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

Status:  Sent back

ITEM #2:  Concord Striped Draped Pocket Cardigan (by 41Hawthorn)
My one request this month was for cardigans.  I've been turning the heater on in my office since August, so I can only imagine what my level of discomfort will be come January.  I know, I know....it's a tough problem to have.  When I saw the colors of this cardigan, I wasn't sold on it.  When I tried it on, though, I fell in love.  I think the colors are a little drab, but it makes me so cozy that I can look past that.

Status:  It's a keeper!

ITEM #3:  Bernadette Lace Overlay Raglan Top (by Market and Spruce)
Here is where I'll admit that, since starting Stitch Fix, I have had to use The Google to look up more than a handful of fashion-related terms.  After watching several seasons of Project Runway, I had  half considered myself an expert on the terminology of fashion, but, alas, I was wrong.  To those who may not know:  Raglan = ????  I still have no idea.  At any rate, I liked this top okay, too.  But it was just okay, so I decided to send it back.  Almost as soon as I sealed the return envelope, though, I felt a pang of regret.

Status:  Sent back

ITEM #4:  Cordelia Striped Boat Neck Sweater (by Market and Spruce)
This sweater is just a little on the boring side, too.  It is very warm and comfortable, which is mostly what I'm looking for in my fall wardrobe, so that is a plus.  I almost didn't even try it on, but once it was on, I knew it was a keeper.  As Dalton took this photo for me, he told me how hideous it looked, and that I looked like a grandma.  I hope he's wrong, since I forsee this comfy piece getting a lot of wear in the colder months.

Status:  It's a keeper!

ITEM #5:  Patrick Chino Pant (by Level 99)
It is my astute observation, after now receiving three boxes from Stitch Fix, that these Stitch Fix folks are proud of their britches.  The Stitch Fix people remind me a little of The Buckle people.  They attempt to convince you that, by wearing pants that cost $100+, you will achieve comfort and style like you've never imagined.  Sadly.....I'm just not pickin' up what they're puttin' down.  So much so, that I didn't even bother to take a photo in the plain, plain, plain brown dress pants that cost entirely too much.

Status:  Sent back at lightning speed

After leaving my feedback for this month's fix, I can't wait to see what I will get in November's box.  In a nutshell, I told the Stitch Fix folks to SPRUCE IT UP a bit next month.  I let them know that, although I did keep two pieces this month, this box was a snooze-fest.  Fingers crossed that next month's items have a little more flair and razzle-dazzle to them!

{September} Stitch Fix -- Rockin' Mommas

As I sit here typing this, I am still suffering the after-effects of skipping town for a weekend.  It's as if my brain is skipping town for the week, as punishment for leaving my dear kiddos and hubby behind for two days.  As a momma and wife, leaving town is always a good idea in theory.  It's also always a sure-fire way to guarantee that seventeen new gray hairs make their way to a momma's scalp.  Nashville was fabulous; the wave of exhaustion I've felt ever since walking into my home Saturday evening.....not so much.

Rest assured, friends.......my friend Jayme and I solved several of the world's problems during our eight-hour non-stop gab fest while on the road this weekend.  I'm sure the Tennessee mountains are majestic and all that, but quite frankly.....we didn't have time to slow down our very important conversations to look around at the breathtaking landscape.  We had more pressing matters to tend to.  For example.....where we might possibly find the sketchiest gas station restroom in Tennessee.  Pretty sure we nailed that one.

If you're not familiar with dotMOM, it is a conference for mommas, put on by the fine folks at LifeWay.  I stumbled upon this conference last summer, after reading a blog post by BooMama, and was able to talk Jayme into attending the 2013 conference in Chattanooga.

Our time in Chattanooga was one of the highlights of our lives thus far, so we decided to make the dotMOM conference our annual tradition.  The 2014 conference was just as special for us.  It was held in Hendersonville, TN, in the most amazing church I've ever laid eyes on -- Long Hollow Baptist Church.  At one point in the conference, we sat through a breakout session in the kids' center, and it was just stunning.  Beautiful.

I'm so glad that Jayme and I have decided to take a weekend out of each year to renew our faith and restore our spirits at the dotMOM conference.  As busy mommas, we sometimes feel like we're the only ones on earth who experience some of the insane, often embarrassing-to-admit, things we feel, say, and do on a daily basis.  It's nice to spend a weekend with other mommas who have, admittedly, dug in the dirty clothes basket to find a pair of suitable shorts for their kiddos to wear to school, because there were none clean.

Aside from being enlightened on the "10 Things Your Spouse Needs From You," and "Making the Most of Your Fringe {Free} Hours," I was also educated in another matter while at dotMOM this past weekend.

101 WAYS TO ROCK SOME SUPER COOL BOOTS.

{That wasn't really a breakout session, but it sure could have been.}

These Nashville chicks can rock a pair of boots, I'm telling you.  I was so envious of their southern fashion and flair.  These women looked bold and beautiful, and confident in the promise of no spit-up on their blouses for two. whole. days.  They were so cool.

All weekend long, I fantasized about what might be waiting for me in my Stitch Fix box, due to arrive on Monday.  I secretly crossed my fingers in hopes of opening my box to see some bold Aztec print peeping out at me, since that seemed to be the IN THING in Nashville.  Although my box was absent of anything Aztec, I was still impressed with this month's Stitch Fix selections.

ITEM #1:  Clarita Floral Print Flutter Sleeve Blouse (by Collective Concepts)
I know I said it last month, but I am SO impressed with the attention these Stitch Fix stylists pay to their customers' preferences.  This shirt might look familiar to you, since I was sent a shirt in the same print last month.  I hated the cut of the shirt last month, but was IN LOVE with this print, and I told the stylists just that.  This month?  Voila.  Same print -- new shirt.  After trying it on twice, though, I just don't think I'm in love with the way the shirt fits.  It feels a little like a maternity top.  And ain't nobody got time for an awkward, "Oh how sweet!  When are you due?" moment at the grocery store.
STATUS:  SENT BACK

ITEM #2:  Jonathan Corduroy Skinny Pant (by Kut From The Kloth)
I am wearing the pant with both the flutter sleeve top and the elephant print top.  I do love the dark green color, and I actually have several tops I could pair with these pants, but at $78, I'm just not feeling them, unfortunately.
STATUS:  SENT BACK, AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION

ITEM #3:  Elli Elephant Print Neck-Tie Blouse (by Under Skies)
Soooo.......how do we feel about this blouse, and all of the pink elephants on it?  The stylist called this print "whimsical," which is the perfect word to describe it.  I'm all about some "whimsical," so I think I really like this top.  Or do I?  Heck, I can't decide.  My 15-year-old niece saw it, loved it, and promised me that, "elephants are really 'in' right now," so maybe this top is hipper than I'm giving it credit for.

STATUS:  STILL THINKING........

ITEM #4:  Genevieve Stacked Chevron Pendant Necklace (by Pixley)
Super excited about this necklace, for the simple fact that I pinned it on Pinterest, and now I own it.  Another true testament to the fact that these stylists DO THEIR HOMEWORK.
STATUS:  KEPT

ITEM #5:  Alan Cowl Neck Asymmetrical Cardigan (by Market and Spruce)
Oh my goodness gracious, I can't tell you how much I love this cardigan.  I told the stylists that I FREEZE all day at work, so they sent me this little gem.  A friend of mine also received this cardigan in a peach color, which gives me great hope that I might someday own this cardigan in every color imaginable.  I love it that much.  My stylist Jillian {who signed my note, "XO," if that isn't the most darling thing ever} said that this cardigan is a great substitute for the heavier army jacket that is "super on trend" right now.  So glad I can finally be on trend.

STATUS:  MY NEW FAVORITE THING

So there you have it -- my September Stitch Fix.  Now if only I could find a pair of rockin' boots to wear like those Nashville mommas........

{AUGUST} Stitch Fix -- Singin' the Blues

"Walkin' on Sonshine" was born to me in the summer of 2012, and like many of my grand ideas in life, I eventually forgot about it.  The fine people at Google sent me a few reminders that the webpage I worked so hard on was about to expire.  Low and behold, they meant it.  I carelessly ignored their warnings and *poof*, the original "Walkin' on Sonshine" vanished.  Buh bye.

Fast forward to now, and I have decided it's time to give the ol' blog another go.  The six or seven people who read the old blog will be so delighted to know that I have, yet again, decided to share mundane details of my life.  You people are so precious.

Allow me to get down to business.  I want to share with you, my favorite peeps, the most ingenious idea EVER {next to DVR, of course} -- STITCH FIX.  Stitch Fix is one of those ideas that make people pause for a moment in life and ponder, "Why, oh why, couldn't I have been clever enough to think of this?!"

Basically, Stitch Fix is a personal shopper for real people.  Not celebs.  REAL PEOPLE.

Here's the low-down:
1)  Set up an account online by filling out 2,397 questions regarding fashion preferences.  I found it to be.....enlightening.  I pretty much came to the conclusion that I have no style.  NONE WHATSOEVER.  My style?  Let's call it CLEARANCE RACK MISH MASH.
2)  After choosing a price range (for me....the cheaper, the better), set a date to receive the first shipment of five items, hand-picked by a personal stylist.
3)  Try on the items once the package arrives, then decide which ones work. Send back the ones that don't, but do so within three days.  Shoppers are only charged for what they keep.

I mean, how much cooler can it get? {Except it would be a whole lot cooler if these items were DIRT CHEAP, which they're really not.}

After I found out about Stitch Fix from a friend, I did some research.  {I'm a nerd.  It's what I do.}  I read blog post after blog post about Stitch Fix, and learned tips and tricks on getting the best "fix" for me.  One blogger said to write an extensive blurb about myself, to ensure my stylist has an excellent idea of who I am.  DONE.  These people at Stitch Fix?  Now they KNOW ME.

One blogger said it would help to give my stylist an idea of who my fashion role model is, as far as celebs go.  This was a real head-scratcher for me.  My first, immediate thought was -- Olivia Pope.  Although I feel certain I could rock a pair of white Jimmy Choos all.day.long, perhaps that's not exactly proper wardrobe for a day shelving books in the library, or an evening sweating it out at the baseball field.

After also ruling out Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon {they need more COLOR in their lives, bless their plain little hearts!} I decided that my fashion "icons" are......drumroll please.....the Robertson sisters.  No joke.  The Robertson sisters from Duck Dynasty.  They dress like moms should dress, all covered up and with class, but also with lots of pizzazz.  I LOVE IT.

So, with all the initial steps completed, I waited patiently for nearly a month to receive my first "fix".  I waited patiently to see what these West Coast stylists, people I've never met in real life, thought I would enjoy wearing.  I waited patiently to see what fashion these people thought matched my zany personality and total absence of style.

So, without further adieu, let me present to you my first style "fix".

ITEM #1:  Indianan Chevron Print Mixed Material Tee (by Pixley)
 I admit....I learned how to "cheat" and found out some items before they arrived.  I had been mulling this top over since the moment I saw it.  I like that it has the chevron pattern, and in bright colors, which is something I told the stylists that I dig.  In the end, this shirt was a keeper.  Comfy, funky, and can be worn with jeans or with dress pants to work.
STATUS:  IT'S A KEEPER!

ITEM #2:  Yorba Abstract Floral Print Kimono (by Papermoon)
 I was not able to view this piece before receiving it; however, I was able to view the word KIMONO, which had me totally worried.  The vision that came to my mind was Memoirs of a Geisha, and I didn't really think there were any styles there I'd like to emulate.  I actually tried this piece on a few times, trying to decide how I felt about it.  In the end, I decided that it was obvious I wasn't IN LOVE with it, so I decided to send it back.  It just felt a little....frumpy.

ITEM #3:  Micah Ruffle Detail Sleeveless Blouse (by Cooper)
This blouse was actually very pretty on.  The detail around the neck is super cute.  I told the stylists that I LOVE BLUE, so I was stoked that they listened and sent me this piece.  What it boils down to with this top....it's kind of plain and I have a few similar to it already.  The material was so soft and silky and had such an expensive feel to it, which also made me nervous.  Since I need a bib when I eat, as it is, maybe I should shy away from anything that would need dry cleaning.

ITEM #4:  Rye Floral Print Short Sleeve Blouse (by Creative Commune)
I wanted to love this top.  I really, really did.  I tried it on with jeans.  I tried it on with black slacks.  I tried it on with tan dress pants, like the cool little "styling card" showed me how to do.  But when I tried it on to show Derek, I knew I had to send it back.  He cracked up.  The way the shirt is made, with black piping down the sides and cut with curved slits on the bottom, it fits like a pajama top, or the top to a pair of scrubs.  It just didn't work for me, even though I was so in love with the bright colors and the floral pattern.

ITEM #5:  Riley Distressed Boyfriend Jean (by Just Black)
These jeans?  ADORABLE.  When I tried them on, though, I felt like I should be the topic of a country tune about painted-on jeans.  Holy smokes, these were tight.  NOT FOR ME.  At all.  Two sizes bigger, and I would have been all in.  They were so darling -- the muffin top just wasn't.
  STATUS:  SENT BACK.  SENT BACK FAST.

My goal this fall is to weed through my wardrobe, replacing much of my decade-old, cheaply-made items with a handful of quality-made items that are actually fashionable and fit me and my taste to a tee.  I figure, why not allow someone to hand-pick items that are JUST FOR ME?

What I'm most impressed with, right off the bat with Stitch Fix, is that I understand why each of these five pieces were picked for me.  I told the stylists that I need more casual, jeans-and-tee type clothing.  I told the stylists that I'm a librarian by day, a sports enthusiast by night -- many days leaving work to go straight to baseball/basketball games {thus wanting as much as possible in the color BLUE}.  They listened, and sent just what I asked for.

While I'm singing the blues that this box didn't 100% work out, I'm looking forward to September's box.  After tweaking my sizing and some of my fit preferences online, I think the next box will be even better.
